Freeride Tour Edelgrieß (32)

A legendary freeride route in the Eastern Alps!

Spectacular terrain, alpine action and a descent of up to 1,400 metres – the Edelgrieß is THE legendary freeride route on the Dachstein. The entrance is via the well-known ladder to the Rosmariestollen door: put on your harness, clip in your via ferrata set and climb up onto the platform – a quick adrenaline rush before the adventure begins.

After the tunnel, you find yourself directly on the steep southern slopes. A 150-metre-long, rope-secured traverse takes you to the open cirque – depending on conditions, it is worth using crampons and a via ferrata set here. Then it's time to strap on your skis and enjoy one of the most beautiful lines in the Eastern Alps!

Powder or firn, narrow couloirs or wide slopes – the Edelgrieß offers countless variations. Depending on the line, the descent ends either at the Türlwandhütte and then continues to the valley station of the Dachstein Glacier Cable Car, or you can extend the fun via the Kramllahn to Ramsau.

For whom: Experienced freeriders with very good skiing technique.

Good to know: Avalanche knowledge and complete safety equipment are mandatory.

Freeride Tour Gruberscharte (35)

This tour is not for Sunday drivers – but for anyone looking for long lines, high alpine feeling and real adventure. After climbing down the ladder and through the Rosmariestollen tunnel, you cross over to Edelgrieß via a rope-secured traverse and continue up towards Edelgrießhöhe. A short climb with skins or skis on your rucksack – and the Dachstein panorama unfolds in all its glory.

From here, you cross below the striking Gamsfeldspitze to the Gruberscharte. The last few metres must be covered on foot – then you stand at the entrance to the massive Gruberkar: endless slopes, steep passages and endless powder. The descent leads far into the valley, past increasingly sparse terrain, until you glide out at the Feistererlift in Ramsau.

For whom: Experienced freeriders with stamina and experience in open ski areas

Good to know: Only ski in safe conditions – the terrain is challenging and requires alpine orientation.

Other freeriding classics on the Dachstein

In addition to Edelgrieß and Gruberscharte, there are other legendary lines waiting for you – each with its own character:

31 Rosmariestollen access: The gateway to many Dachstein classics. The impressive ladder and tunnel take you directly to the sunny southern slopes – which is an experience in itself.

33 Schwadrinn: Steep, challenging, legendary. Only for absolute experts – preferably with a guide!

34 Gamsfeld: One of the longest and most impressive descents in the region – 1,400 metres of altitude difference down to Ramsau. High alpine, technical, unforgettable.

Attention: All routes lead through open ski areas. Please check the weather, snow and avalanche conditions in advance and take complete safety equipment (avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe, first aid kit, harness, via ferrata set, etc.) with you.

Ortovox Training Park & avalanche transceiver check

At the Dachstein Glacier, an ORTOVOX TRAINING PARK and an avalanche transceiver checkpoint (LVS checkpoint) are now available. These innovative facilities offer hands-on training opportunities and enable reliable functionality checks of safety equipment.

Ski touring and freeriding in alpine terrain are fascinating experiences that allow you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the winter mountains. With a wide range of marked ski touring routes and challenging off-piste trails, the Dachstein Glacier offers ideal conditions for both.

Safety is the top priority: At the Dachstein Glacier, the ORTOVOX TRAINING PARK and LVS CHECKPOINT are available for your use. These innovative facilities provide realistic training scenarios and ensure that your safety gear is functioning properly.

Realistic training for emergency situations

Anyone venturing into unsecured terrain should regularly practice using their emergency equipment. The new ORTOVOX TRAINING PARK at Dachstein enables realistic avalanche search training without any risk. The permanently installed facility is located at the start of the Hallstatt Glacier in the direction of Seethalerhütte and is easily accessible. In an area measuring 80 x 80 m, transmitters are buried to simulate avalanche rescues with varying levels of difficulty (1–6 buried victims). The system is compatible with all standard avalanche transceivers.

Ortovox Checkpoint: Reliable transceiver check

A functioning avalanche transceiver is essential for safe travel in open terrain. The ORTOVOX CHECKPOINT offers a quick and reliable way to check whether your transceiver is switched on and transmitting correctly. A visual and acoustic signal provides feedback on the device’s functionality as you pass by. The checkpoint is installed near the Dachstein mountain station and helps ensure that winter sports enthusiasts are well-prepared before heading into the backcountry.

Both facilities are available free of charge!
